Waikanae 002 A fantastic read about an interesting time in history. Auckland 107 A great read, how well she wrote about what to her was a 'normal' childhood, to us it was amazing and disturbing. It gave the book a fresh and honest feel and left the reader to analyse if they wanted. We generally liked that the author chose description over analysis e.g. We think it's our favourite so far this year. The whole group appreciated reading this book. A story of bravado, driven by fire-in-the-belly love of Africa. The central premise of “Ebony & Ivy” is that the history of American higher education, especially that of its oldest and most venerated institutions, is riddled with racism. ![]() ![]() ![]() But this collection from Morgan Harper Nichols was like having a breakthrough therapy session, then watching a TED Talk, and finally getting tucked into a warm bed by the author herself while the scent of lavender drifts from a marble-patterned essential oil diffuser. Thankfully, this is the kind of biography feature we do far far better than the Americans. The book was such a success it was inevitable perhaps that an adaptation would be made. In doing so it takes in the many contradictions that was Stuart addict, career criminal, advocate, homeless man, violent psychopath, campaigner, disabled man and victim of sexual abuse and charts pivotal moments in what led Stuart to become the man he was. As the title of both book and film suggests, the book took the unusual approach of detailing Stuart's life from his adult life down through to his childhood.
